Violinist Igor Oistrakh has died at the age of 90.Igor Oistrakh no doubt is tired of being compared with his famous father, the great Russian violinist David Oistrakh. But those comparisons were inevitable since the 1960s, when he began building his solo violin career in the West.
To judge from the younger Oistrakh’s recital Sunday at Symphony Center, the comparisons are also odious.
American concertgoers have heard next to nothing from the poker-faced Russian since his joint appearances with his father in the mid-’60s.
Those with long memories will recall that the Oistrakhs performed together with the Chicago Symphony in 1964.

Subsequent decades found Igor confining his activities to Western and Eastern Europe. His program biography states that he was born in 1942 but several reference books give his birthdate as 1931. In any case, he lives in Brussels, where he teaches at the conservatory and occasionally performs with his 37-year-old son, Valery, also a violinist.
