Violinist Igor Oistrakh has died at the age of 90.

Igor Oistrakh no doubt is tired of being compared with his famous father, the great Russian violinist David Oistrakh. But those comparisons were inevitable since the 1960s, when he began building his solo violin career in the West.

To judge from the younger Oistrakh’s recital Sunday at Symphony Center, the comparisons are also odious.

American concertgoers have heard next to nothing from the poker-faced Russian since his joint appearances with his father in the mid-’60s.

Those with long memories will recall that the Oistrakhs performed together with the Chicago Symphony in 1964.
