- Dorothea Dix- began touring from state to state to document the cramped and unsanitary conditions in prisons and mental institutions, and she eventually created a certificate that was brought to the Massachusetts legislature, which pushed the budget to expand the State Mental Hospital at Worcester.
Dix also took record of the conditions and treatment of patients, raising awareness through campaigns to establish asylums with sanitary and substantial conditions.
